How many AP classes for a competitive college app?

Feeling a bit anxious here, I’ve got a question for you all. I'm a junior and I’ve taken a couple AP classes so far, thinking about my senior year schedule now. What’s the 'ideal' number of AP classes to be considered competitive for top colleges? Anyone wish they’d taken more or less in hindsight?

It's great that you're thinking ahead about your senior year schedule. The number of Advanced Placement (AP) classes can vary greatly among students, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. For top colleges, students often take a rigorous course load, which might mean enrolling in numerous AP classes where available. If a student's school offers a wide selection of AP courses, it wouldn't be unusual to see applications to competitive colleges that include 8 to 12 AP courses over their high school career.

However, it's crucial to balance your academic rigor with your own well-being and ability to excel in those courses. Remember, colleges will look at the context of what's offered at your school as well as how you challenge yourself within that context. If taking additional AP classes might compromise your ability to maintain strong grades or engage in meaningful extracurricular activities, then it might be wise to take fewer. Quality is valued over quantity. Reflect on what you're passionate about and where you can exhibit excellence and leadership, whether that’s in the classroom, in extracurriculars, or elsewhere.
