What does 'branch of military' refer to?

Okay, can anyone clarify what the 'branch of military' term means? I'm exploring paths after high school and military service is one that has come up, but I'm a bit lost with some of this jargon.

In the context of the United States, when we talk about a 'branch of military', we're referring to a specific section of the overall Armed Forces. Each branch has its own structure, commands, and responsibilities.

The U.S. has six branches of the military: The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the most recently created, Space Force.

The Army is the oldest branch and primarily handles land-based operations. The Marine Corps, although smaller, often engages in first-on-the-ground combat situations and works closely with the Navy. The Navy manages operations at sea - this involves deploying ships, submarines, and aircraft. The Air Force manages air and space operations, including tactical and strategic advantages in combat situations.

The Coast Guard is a bit different. It's under the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime but can be moved to the Navy in times of war. It mostly handles maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and search & rescue.

The newest branch, Space Force, is tasked with protecting U.S. and allied interests in space, like monitoring ballistic missile launches, tracking space debris, and maintaining satellites for communication and coordination.

Each branch offers various careers and training programs, so it's good to research and understand how each fits your personal interests and long-term goals before making a decision.
