Hey guys, I recently registered for the Selective Service, like pretty much all guys do when they turn 18. But I'm a bit confused about what exactly that means…I mean, do we get to choose which military branch we could potentially serve in if needed? Or how does that work exactly? Any clarity would be appreciated. Cheers!
Hello!
The Selective Service System is not tied to a specific branch of the military. Should the need for a military draft arise, the Selective Service would determine who is called to serve through a lottery system, based on dates of birth. It's worth noting that it's been quite some time since the last military draft in the United States, which occurred during the Vietnam War.
After the lottery process, those selected would undergo a physical, psychological, and moral evaluation to determine their fitness for service. Once you pass the evaluations and are officially drafted, you would be assigned to a branch of the military. The military determines where draftees are needed most at the time and assigns them accordingly—so you don't get to choose which branch you're drafted into.
While it may sound intimidating, keep in mind that the implementation of a draft is extremely rare. It is, however, a legal requirement for most males between the ages of 18 and 25 to register with the Selective Service.
I hope this provides some clarity for you on the subject. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.
