Is a 32 ACT Score Competitive?

Hey everyone, so I just got a 32 on my ACT. I honestly don't know if that's considered a good score or not. How does this look to colleges, and should I maybe even consider a retake?

A score of 32 on the ACT is generally considered strong. The maximum possible score is 36, so you're very close to the top! A 32 puts you in the 97th percentile nationally, meaning you scored higher than approximately 97 percent of all test takers.

Which colleges you're competitive for, though, depends on your particular list of target schools. For less selective colleges and universities, a 32 ACT score will more than meet their average ACT score ranges. However, if you're targeting very selective or Ivy League schools where the average ACT score may often be 33 or higher, your slightly lower score may be a bit below their average.

Whether you should retake the test depends on a few factors. If you feel that you did not perform at your best on the test day - perhaps due to not feeling well or unfamiliarity with the format - and believe you could improve with additional study or test prep, then retaking the test might make sense. But keep in mind that at selective schools, test scores are only one part of a holistic review process which also takes into account your GPA, course rigor, extracurriculars, essays, and letters of recommendation.

Finally, confirm if your potential colleges are currently test-optional or test-blind due to changes from the pandemic. If they are, you can choose whether or not to submit your scores based on how well you feel they reflect your academic potential.

Remember that whatever you decide, a 32 ACT score is a strong score and a testament to your hard work and ability.
