Can anyone share their experience with Whitman admissions?

I'm really interested in Whitman College and I'd love to know what the admission process is actually like from someone who's gone through it. Are there any unexpected things I should be prepared for?

While I haven't gone through the Whitman's admission process personally, I can definitely provide some insight through the experiences of students. In general, they found the process straightforward and considerate, as Whitman really strives to understand each applicant holistically.

For the application itself, besides the common sections, Whitman pretty uniquely allows you to choose between submitting an additional essay, an additional letter of recommendation, or an in-person (or virtual) interview. Many students I've worked with opted for the interview, as it gives a more personal touch and allows the admissions team to get to know them beyond just what's on paper.

In this regard, one of the "unexpected things" you might want to prepare for is this interview choice. Public speaking and interviews can be nerve-racking for some. However, from the experiences I've been told about, these interviews were conducted in a very relaxed, conversational manner. Try to think of the interview more as a conversation, where you get to discuss your passions, aspirations, and what you hope to contribute to the Whitman community.

In terms of timing, expect to hear back around the typical time in late March if you apply Regular Decision. Those who apply Early Decision have their notifications around mid-December.

As always, the college application process varies for everyone. These experiences and tips can give you some ideas of what to expect, but your journey will be individual to you. Good luck with your application to Whitman!
