How to get into vet schools in Washington?

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about becoming a vet and I've heard Washington has some great vet programs. Anyone here go to Washington for their pre-vet/vet studies? How competitive is it and what should I be doing now to increase my chances of acceptance?

It's awesome that you're considering a career in veterinary medicine and you're correct, the Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine is a well-regarded program. In terms of competitiveness, like most vet programs, it is quite demanding. Here are a few steps you can take to strengthen your application:

1. Academic Preparation:

Most veterinary schools, including WSU, require a Bachelor's degree as a prerequisite for admission. It isn't mandatory that your degree is in a science-related field, but it's crucial to complete prerequisite courses, which typically include Chemistry (General and Organic), Physics, Biology, and Mathematics. Do your best to maintain a strong GPA, especially in these prerequisite courses.

2. Veterinary and Animal Experience:

WSU recommends at least 400 hours of veterinary and/or animal-related experience. This could include volunteering or working in a veterinary clinic, shelter, farm, or research lab. Gaining a wide variety of experiences can make your application more competitive.

3. Take the GRE:

The WSU College of Veterinary Medicine requires the GRE for admission. A high score can definitely strengthen your application. Be sure to prepare thoroughly for this exam.

4. Letters of Recommendation:

Secure solid references who can vouch for your suitability for the profession. These could be professors from your undergraduate studies, veterinarians you've worked with, or employers from relevant jobs.

5. Personal Statement:

Express your passion for veterinary medicine through your personal statement and explain why you're an excellent candidate for WSU's program. Discuss your experiences, what you've learned from them, and your future goals in the veterinary profession.

In addition to doing the above, stay informed about the application process and deadlines by regularly checking WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine website. This way, you can ensure your application is complete and submitted on time. Good luck with your journey!
