Does National Honor Society really matter for college apps?

Hey everyone, I've been weighing whether or not I should put time into trying to join the National Honor Society. I'm a junior and I'm starting to feel the pressure with college apps looming over the horizon. Do colleges really care if you're in NHS, or is it just another extracurricular in their eyes? Has anyone seen a real benefit to their apps from being a part of NHS?

Hello! I completely understand where you're coming from, as my child faced the same dilemma just a few years ago. From what we observed, National Honor Society (NHS) is a respected organization, and membership can certainly be a positive addition to your college applications. Being in NHS signals to colleges that you've achieved a level of academic excellence and are committed to service and leadership. However, it's also important to remember that it's just one of many potential extracurricular activities. Admission committees value depth and commitment, so if being in NHS is meaningful to you and you take on active roles within the society, it could enhance your application. That said, if there are other activities or interests that you are more passionate about and that would allow you to demonstrate leadership or a unique skill, feel free to prioritize those. In the end, it's the quality and impact of your extracurricular engagement that matter most, not just the name of the organization you're part of. Good luck with your decision, and just know that either path you take can be beneficial!
