The SAT is a standardized test and its score is used as a part of the college admissions process. Your SAT score is actually a combination of two sections' scores: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) and Math. Each section is scored between 200 and 800, giving you a total SAT score range between 400 and 1600.
When it comes to the scoring breakdown, for each section, the test questions are marked as either correct or incorrect and this raw score is then converted to a scale score, which gives us the section scores. No deduction for incorrect answers is made.
As of spring 2024, the SAT has transitioned to a digital format, so the Reading and Writing section includes two 32-minute modules with 54 questions. The Math section covers two 35-minute modules with 44 questions.
These individual section scores are critical as different colleges emphasize different sections, based on the program you're applying to. For instance, a STEM-related program may emphasize the Math section more. Additionally, colleges also use section scores to assess your academic strengths and potential areas for growth.
