Curious about Cal State University, Merced

Hey folks! So, I'm just doing some college researching and I came across California State University, Merced. Can anybody share some insight on the programs they offer, campus environment, and what the student life is like over there?

California State University, Merced (CSU Merced), is a public research university located in the heart of Central Valley, California. It's the youngest institution in the California State University (CSU) system, having opened its doors in 2005. Despite its newness, the university offers a variety of competitive programs.

Academically, CSU Merced offers 24 undergraduate majors and 25 minors across its three schools: the School of Engineering, the School of Natural Sciences, and the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts. Some of the more popular majors include Psychology, Biology, Management, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. Class sizes are relatively small, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1, promoting interactive and engaging learning experiences.

Regarding the campus environment, CSU Merced's campus spans over 800 acres, providing ample space for students to engage in various activities. The campus prides itself on being sustainable, aiming to become the first research university to reach "triple net-zero status", meaning zero net energy usage, zero landfill waste, and zero net emissions.

Student life at CSU Merced is vibrant and engaging. With over 200 student-run organizations, students have the opportunity to get involved and pursue their interests beyond academics. There are also initiatives in place to promote a sense of community such as the First Year Experience and Living Learning Communities. The campus also offers many recreational facilities including the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center, an aquatics center, and sports fields. Intramural sports are also popular among the students.

Bear in mind that as with any university, the best way to get a true sense of the campus environment and student life is to visit (if possible), or reach out to current students or alumni for their perspectives. Good luck with your college search!
