Understanding SAT Scores: Whats a good score on SATs?

I'm about to sit for my SATs and I'm just trying to set a target score. Can someone pls tell me what's considered a 'good score' and how universities might view these scores?

It's fantastic that you're preparing for the SAT and setting a target score - proper planning and goal setting are key steps in strong test prep!

Firstly, while it vary depending on the specifics of the college, a decent score is often considered to start around 1200, a good score is around 1400, and an excellent score is 1500 and above.

But here's the catch: your target score should depend mainly on the schools to which you're applying. Colleges and universities often present score ranges for their incoming freshmen class. Understanding where your desired schools' range lies can help you set a goal that is both ambitious and attainable.

For instance, highly selective schools such as Harvard or Princeton often have middle 50% SAT score ranges from about 1460 to 1580, meaning that 50% of the admitted students scored within that range. Note that Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Purdue University, Brown University, Yale University, The University of Texas at Austin, and Caltech will require all applicants to submit an SAT score for the 2024-2025 application cycle.

Remember that even though you're aiming to achieve a score within your desired schools' range, a strong SAT score is just one component of a college application. It won't guarantee admission, but it can certainly enhance your profile!

Lastly, if you don't get your desired score on your first attempt, don't panic! Many students take the SAT more than once and colleges typically use your highest score. You can also focus on strengthening other aspects of your application, such as your extracurricular activities or essays.

Commitment to improvement can be as impactful as a high score! Good luck with your SAT prep!
