Pros and cons of joining different branches for military police?

Hey guys, I've been thinking about potentially pursuing a career in military police after high school. However, I'm not quite sure which branch would be the best for this. Can anyone help me understand the pros and cons of becoming a military police officer in different branches? Thanks in advance!

Military policing spans across several branches of the military, each with its distinct nuances in training, duty responsibilities, locations, and potential career paths. I'll outline a few of general pros and cons for each.

Army (MP):

Pros: The Army MP provides a comprehensive training program and a wide variety of duties, such as law enforcement, investigations, and corrections. Additionally, your assignments can vary greatly, from providing security at a base to combat support.

Cons: Some cons could be the frequency of deployments or relocations, which can be disruptive to personal life.

Navy (MA):

Pros: The Navy Master-at-Arms (as Navy MPs are known) also offers diverse opportunities from law enforcement to canine handling. You may also be assigned to Naval bases across the world, providing unique travel experiences.

Cons: Similar to the Army, frequent relocation may be a downside. Also, duties may extend to less traditional MP roles such as anti-terrorism operations.

Marine Corps (MP):

Pros: The Marine Corps MP training is noted for its rigor, which may be a positive aspect if you enjoy challenges. It's also the smallest branch in terms of numbers, which can lead to a closer-knit community feel.

Cons: The high expectations and physical demands might not be for everyone. Also, the smaller size might limit certain opportunities compared to larger branches.

Air Force (SF):

Pros: The Air Force Security Forces (their version of MPs) has multiple specialized fields such as combat arms, dog handling, and investigations, potentially providing a wide array of experiences.

Cons: As with the Marines, the demanding training can be a con for some. Also, their role involves both law enforcement and combat, which may not be for everyone.

Coast Guard (ME):

Pros: Coast Guard Maritime Enforcement (ME) offer unique law enforcement experiences pertaining to maritime law. It provides opportunities to work closely with civilians, make rescues, and aid in disasters.

Cons: The role of Coast Guard ME is different from traditional MP work because a portion is spent at sea enforcing maritime laws, which may not be everyone's interest.

Space Force (SF):

Pros: Security Forces in the Space Force, the newest branch, presents a cutting-edge, space-based mission focus which could offer unique opportunities.

Cons: As a new branch, it's still in the process of establishing itself, which could mean potential pathways or roles aren't as clear as in other branches.

Please remember to thoroughly research and speak with recruiters from each branch before making a decision. And don't forget, joining the military is a big commitment, and military police is just one of many career options within each branch. Best of luck with your decision!
