How important is a diverse selection of electives in high school?

So I’m a junior and was wondering about elective courses in high school. Should I be trying to show a wide range of interests with my electives, or is it better to focus on electives that align more with my potential college major? Will colleges care if I took things like film or culinary arts if I want to go into engineering?

It's great that you're thinking ahead about your elective choices! Generally, colleges appreciate when students have a well-rounded education, and that includes electives. Taking courses like film or culinary arts can actually be a good thing, even if you're planning to go into engineering. It shows that you're a well-rounded individual with diverse interests, and it can actually make you more memorable as an applicant.

But it's also important to take advanced electives in areas related to your intended major, as this shows depth in your field of interest. For example, if your high school offers advanced math or science electives and you're able to excel in them, that would be beneficial for an engineering track. Balance is key – you can demonstrate your passion for engineering while also showing you have a range of interests and skills. Colleges are looking for students who are both focused and adaptable!
