Good Public Colleges in NYC?

I'm a NYC native and want to explore the public colleges available here. Can anyone recommend good public colleges in NYC for a prospective humanities major?

Yes, absolutely! New York City has a wealth of public colleges offering excellent humanities tracks. Here are a few to consider:

1. CUNY Hunter College: Known for a strong foundation in the liberal arts, Hunter College offers a diverse range of humanities programs including literature, philosophy, history, and art. The school provides broad exposure to different cultures, periods, and ideas. Plus, its location in Manhattan offers plenty of opportunities for cultural immersion and internships.

2. CUNY Baruch College: While it is often recognized for its business programs, Baruch also provides solid education in the arts and sciences. It has a respected humanities department with degrees in English, History, Philosophy, and more.

3. CUNY City College: Known as the flagship college of the CUNY system, City College boasts strong programs in liberal arts and humanities. Their Department of Humanities and the Arts offers a diverse curriculum, encompassing everything from literature and philosophy to music and theater.

4. CUNY Queens College: Queens College is another great choice for humanities majors. They offer a multitude of options, such as history, English, philosophy, and languages. They even have a unique Classical, Middle Eastern & Asian Languages & Cultures department if you're interested in that area.

5. Stony Brook University (SUNY): Although it's not within the five boroughs of New York City, it's an excellent state school within commuting distance. Stony Brook has a dynamic humanities department, offering programs in English, history, philosophy, studies in race and ethnicity, and more.

Each of these schools brings a slightly different focus in their humanities courses, so look closely at the programs they each offer. Also, remember to visit the campuses (if you can) to see where you feel most at home. Seeing the campus and meeting potential professors can really give you a better idea of what to expect as a student there.
