Deciding on a Top 20 college

Grade 11 here. I'm targeting Top 20 colleges in the US for my Bachelor's. I know rankings aren't everything, but they're a start, right? My major isn't fixed, but might lean towards the sciences. Any advice on how to start narrowing down my choices?

You're very proactive in starting to consider your options for top tier colleges at this stage, and you're right - while rankings aren't everything, they can be a helpful starting point.

Firstly, consider the location and campus culture of the university. Do you prefer an urban environment where you can immerse yourself in a vibrant city, or do you prefer a traditional college town? Similarly, the climate may well be something you might want to consider. Some students thrive in the hustle and bustle of a big city like New York City (Columbia University) or Boston (MIT, Harvard), while others might prefer a quieter, more serene environment like rural New Hampshire (Dartmouth).

Secondly, while you haven't decided on a major yet, it's good to have a general direction in mind. You mentioned leaning towards the natural sciences, so you may want to look for schools that have strong science programs or extensive research opportunities. Colleges like MIT and Caltech are renowned for their STEM programs but don’t disregard schools that are known for humanities as they often have robust science departments as colleges generally strive to provide quality education across the board.

Extracurriculars can play a significant role in your college life, so they're also a significant factor to consider. Participation in clubs, competitions, sports, or community service can provide invaluable experiences, enhance your skills, and boost your application profile. Look for universities that have student organizations or programs that align with your interests.

Lastly, try to understand the bidding process of each college. Are they need-blind in terms of financial need? Do they offer scholarships or other financial aids? There is also the matter of the application itself. Some schools require their unique essays; others accept the Common App or Coalition App. The amount and complexity of supplements can be a determinant as well.

Uni tours are an excellent way to get a sense of the campus culture though online options can suffice depending on the situation. And to gain insights from actual students at the universities you are considering, consider talking to students or alumni, or reading online forums or blogs participated by current students who can share their experiences.

You seem to be on the right track. Remember, every university has something unique to offer. Take your time to understand each one of them, and make an informed decision. Good luck with your research!
