Has anyone taken an American Studies course in high school? I'm deciding on my schedule and would love to know if it helped you in any specific way, maybe with certain majors or just general college-readiness?
Absolutely, my child took American Studies their junior year, and it was a very enriching experience for them. They gained a deeper understanding of American history and culture, which has been incredibly beneficial. Not only did it help them in developing critical thinking and analysis skills, which are essential in college, but it also provided a solid background that was useful for their current major in political science. On a general note, courses like American Studies often demand a lot of reading and writing, which definitely builds the college-readiness that you’re talking about. If you’re planning to major in something related to social sciences or humanities, I’d say it's definitely a plus on your high school transcript. Plus, don't forget that showing a well-rounded curriculum can show colleges your academic curiosity and willingness to challenge yourself. However, if your major is going to be in a very different field, like engineering, it might not be as crucial. Still, I believe it never hurts to be well-versed in a range of subjects!
