How important are world language classes in high school for college admissions?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to plan out my remaining high school classes and I’m not sure how many years of a world language I need. Do colleges have a preferred number of years for language study, or is it okay if I just take two years and then focus on other interests? Thanks!

Hello there! It's great that you're thinking ahead about your high school coursework. The importance of world language classes can vary depending on the colleges you're interested in. Many colleges recommend or even require a minimum of two years of the same world language for admission, but the most competitive colleges often like to see three or more years. This demonstrates not only proficiency but also dedication to a subject over time.

However, it's also important to balance your schedule and allow time for other interests that might help you develop a more focused specialty or 'spike.' If you already have two years and your other courses and extracurriculars are strong, then it may be fine to pursue other areas, especially if those areas align with your potential major or career interests. Nonetheless, if you can comfortably fit in a third or fourth year of language without jeopardizing your performance in other courses or your well-being, it could strengthen your application. Ultimately, it's about finding a balance that works for you while meeting the expectations of your prospective schools.
