How Should I Structure My Common App Essay?

I’ve started sketching out some ideas for my Common App essay, but I'm not sure how to format it in terms of paragraphs. Do admissions officers have a preferred number of paragraphs, or is there a standard that everyone follows? I'm wondering if anyone has insights on structuring their essay to make a strong impact.

Hey there! Great question about structuring your Common App essay. The format isn't set in stone, but clarity is key. A strong essay typically has an engaging opening, several body paragraphs, and a reflective conclusion. To start, your opening should really hook the reader in. Then, use the body paragraphs to delve into your story or the points you want to highlight. Aim for 4-6 paragraphs in total to allow for enough detail without overwhelming the reader.

Each paragraph should explore a different aspect or move the story forward. Remember to transition smoothly between these paragraphs to maintain a clear narrative flow. And finally, wrap it up with a conclusion that brings everything together and adds insight into how your experiences have shaped who you are or your outlook on life.

For the actual paragraphs, let them form naturally around your content. Some paragraphs may be shorter if they're highlighting a snapshot moment; others might be longer for storytelling or reflection. I've seen successful essays with just 3 paragraphs and successful ones with upwards of 10 paragraphs so it really all comes down to your writing style and the story you are trying to tell. Just be sure every paragraph is purposeful! An exceptional essay usually has natural ebb and flow, just like any good story.

I hope this helps!
