Florida International University: how does the admission process work?

Hey! I'm thinking about applying to Florida International University and was hoping someone could give me a rundown on their admission process. What kind of grades are they looking for? Are any particular extracurriculars or experiences that they value?

As part of your application to Florida International University (FIU), you'd need to submit your high school transcripts, and SAT or ACT scores, and pay an application fee. Your application will be reviewed holistically, which means they'll take into consideration your GPA, coursework rigor, standardized test scores, and extracurricular involvement.

FIU generally looks for a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for freshman applicants, but keep in mind that the applicant pool can vary from year to year and it's a good idea to aim higher in order to place yourself in a competitive position.

If Florida International University is a top choice for you, try to aim for a GPA at or above the average. As for extracurriculars, universities generally value quality over quantity. You don't need to participate in every club or activity. Instead, focus on a few areas that you're genuinely passionate about and where you can make a significant contribution or demonstrate leadership. According to the 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars, Tier 1 (national-level achievement) and Tier 2 (state-level achievement) activities can significantly enhance your application. That being said, don’t worry if you don’t have those, Tier 3 (leadership roles, club presidency, etc) and Tier 4 (general membership in a club, volunteer work, etc) activities are more common and still valuable. Keep in mind that the point of extracurriculars is to show colleges your interests and commitments outside of the classroom.

Lastly, FIU doesn't require any recommendation letters or any essays. However, these can provide insights into your character and personal accomplishments and can be added to your application if you believe they improve your application.

More than anything, the admission committee wants to see you're ready to handle the college workload and that you'll be a good fit for their school. They're interested in well-rounded individuals who will contribute to their campus community. Make sure to verify the application deadline(s) directly from the FIU admissions website. Good luck with your application!
