I'm thinking about taking AP Human Geography next year. Can anyone give me an idea of how difficult it is? I've never taken an AP class before so a bit stressed about it. Are there lots of essays, or more multiple choice tests? Any insight would be amazing!
AP Human Geography aims to introduce you to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth's surface. It's known as one of the more manageable AP classes, making it a decent starting point, particularly for freshmen, in terms of the coursework and exam.
There's indeed a substantial amount of content to master, especially memorization of definitions and terms. Being a social studies subject, you'll be expected to understand and analyze trends, correlations, impacts and theories across various themes such as population and migration, culture, political organization of space, and urban and city development, to mention a few.
As for the assessment style, it's a blend of both essays and multiple-choice questions. The AP exam is made up of two sections: the first entails 60 multiple-choice questions that you'll have to tackle within 45 minutes. This part is designed to test your understanding of the course's key concepts.
The second section takes 75 minutes and involves three free-response questions, which are essentially essay-type questions. These gauge your ability to apply and integrate concepts and skills learned in the course.
Note that one way to perform well in AP Human Geography is being an active reader as you'll frequently be required to analyze text-based sources, maps, diagrams, charts, and images.
Certainly, the difficulty level can vary depending on individual skills and strengths. However, many students find that the academic challenge posed by AP Human Geography serves as a good introduction to college-level coursework. Good luck with your decision!
