What foreign language level do colleges like to see from high school applicants?

Hello! I’ve been taking Spanish since freshman year and I’m trying to figure out how many years I should stick with it. Do colleges have a preferred level of language proficiency they want to see, or is taking language classes up to a certain level enough to satisfy admissions committees?

Hello there! I'm glad you're thinking strategically about your language studies. Most colleges recommend a minimum of two years of foreign language study, but the most competitive applicants often have four years under their belt.

Sticking with Spanish through your senior year can only help, especially if you're able to reach advanced levels of proficiency or tackle AP Spanish. Displaying both consistency and commitment to mastering a language is seen as a positive indicator of your work ethic and ability to handle college-level coursework.

For instance, a student I worked with continued Spanish until they completed the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam, which demonstrated to admissions officers a high level of dedication and proficiency. If you enjoy Spanish and are doing well, it could certainly strengthen your application. If it starts to conflict with your ability to take other advanced courses relevant to your desired major or specialization, then you might want to weigh your options. Keep up the great work!
