Admissions Advice

Is this an extracurricular?
Answered

Hey ya'll! During this quarantine I've been trying to make up for all of the activities that have been cancelled and spending my time in another way. Would starting a blog count as an extracurricular for college apps? It's something I've always wanted to do, but wanted to make sure it's a legitimate activity before I count it. Thanks in advance!

Starting a blog is an extracurricular and looks great on college apps. It especially looks good depending on how much content you have on it. If you have a lot, that is a great extracurricular. I say go for it!

Starting a blog definitely counts as extra credit! Focus on the subject matter and try to make it as educational as possible.

Blogging is a great way to get yourself out there. The process at first will take some time but the outcome will definitely help you out in college applications. I wish you luck!

Starting a blog is an awesome project, but it really depends on the subject matter of the blog, and how quantifiable your achievements are. When you create content, admissions officers like to see a more "intellectual" spin on a topic. For example, writing a blog about mainstream fashion won't be as impressive as a well-researched blog about the sustainability issues in fashion. (This also means that a traditional personal blog won't have much weight in admissions).

It's also easier to evaluate a self-driven project like this if your achievements are quantifiable - this might mean something like a certain number of pageviews, readers, or posts (though quality is more important than quantity). Blogging is a very powerful tool though, and learning SEO (search engine optimization) and using it to get your blog read would be impressive. Hope this helps!
