So I am a proud Palestinian-Armenian-American. When I apply to colleges what would I put for demographic info. Could I put other and then in personal statements discuss discrmination I experience and the refusal to recognized mena students. For college vine for best chancing should I put white then under “are you a member of an under represented minority” yes or no. Thanks
Yes! Putting other sounds like a great idea, or if they have a mixed option, that would also work. Race is a socially constructed label in any case, so feel free to put whatever you feel most represents you and your experiences.
Writing about your experiences with discrimination is a great essay topic, and would also help clarify the demographics thing for your colleges.
Yes, I think that would be a great idea! If you are using the CommonApp later on to apply (I think this works with Coalition too), you would probably mark whatever options you feel most comfortable with when the demographics section comes up and elaborate on your details in the Additional Information Section. I had a tricky background being South American-European-American. Thus, when I marked myself as White Hispanic, I had German/American dual citizenship which I had to report that looked confusing without some context...
This is where the additional info helped me explain my background to admission officers: I wrote about living with my grandmother from Chile and how she shaped my life by assimilating to cultures in New England. I think making sure to be brief, but specific/adding detail about your circumstances the best way to go.
It might also help to write about yourself as multicultural if that's how you fee, and explain how that ties into things you want to do with college: i/e study abroad/take languages like I did.
