I want to know if colleges will still accept students if they have a suspension under their belt.
Although a suspension isn't exactly favorable, having one on your transcript does NOT mean an automatic rejection from colleges. Many colleges advocate for a holistic admissions process. This means that they consider everything in your application, so if they receive an application with a suspension, they still consider the applicant's remaining information, such as grades, essays, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, etc. With a holistic admissions process, colleges cannot reject an applicant solely because of a suspension. Therefore, it's important to have an application that still suggests a competitive candidate by having good grades, well written essays, etc.
Colleges definitely still accept students if they have a suspension on their record. However, it's important to keep in mind that the way a suspension is viewed is going to vary by school or even by admissions officers within a specific school. Somewhere like University of Virginia might consider it a much more serious matter than some others. The severity or type of offense is also likely to play a role in their decision as well.
The good news is that college applications will typically ask if you have any serious disciplinary actions on your record and you'll get a chance to explain what happened, the circumstances leading up to the event, and what you learned from it. This is your best chance to show a school that you've learned from your mistake and grew from it. It will be important for you to accept responsibility for your actions in the essay you write. If an admissions officer thinks your explanation is trying to excuse your behavior, instead of explain it, it unfortunately won't reflect well on you.
This article does a good job explaining how to approach this situation when it comes time for you to apply. https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-deal-with-disciplinary-problems-on-your-college-application/
I know a boy who was suspended for a ridiculous reason and the administration wrote a letter explaining the triviality of the circumstances as a part of his application.
