Starting a Non-Profit - What Issues Should I Be Aware of?

A friend and I are thinking of starting a non-profit. We have a product we could sell that could serve as a means to fund an environmental charity already in existence. Are there any issues with respect to how colleges may view this that we should be aware of?

I recently attended CVs ECs webinar And I’m paraphrasing but the gist is

if the charity is run by you or you are affiliated with it either as members your parents your best friend works there then go for it but if you just start a EC and mention help fundraiser for friends charity but if it is an organization with minimal ties and you are junior or senior year especially colleges will frown on it due to their belief you are just doing it for college admissions.
