Lately, one piece of advice I've heard from others is to show demonstrated interest. However, I have no idea what the term means and how to. A few things I'd like to know about is how to show demonstrated interest, what types of schools I should show demonstrated interest in, and if this can affect my admission process/chances.
Demonstrated interest in measured by how actively you engage with the colleges marketing material, social media presence and website. If you follow the college on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and sign up for add'l information on their website, or sign up for a online guided tour, or visit their campus, or contact various people at their college with questions, the college is following and tracing every click and interaction you have with them. By being very actively engaged in the colleges public presence you are "demonstrating interest".
I hope that help clarify what the term means.
Now Part B. Not all schools care if you love them or like them. You can determine this by looking up their matrix of what they consider important to them on their submitted Common Data Set. The table is called C7.
C7 and the possible check boxes are the following
-Very Important
-Important
-Considered
-Not Considered
For example, Georgetown doesn't care about demonstrated interest so their check box under Demonstrated Interest is "not considered". Typically Ivy's, Elites and Top LACs do not care about demonstrated interest. It's usually 2nd tier colleges that are looking to fill seats with paying applicants versus financial aid applicants.
Good luck.
