Hello 🙂!
I'm a Nigerian, just discovered the scholaro gpa calculator. It's asking for the credits of each course(I'm using WASSCE), are they all equivalent?
By the way, when the the gpa is calculated, will it be weighted or unweighted?
WASSCE grades are the following but USA grades are different.
Grade Numerical Equivalent (%) Points (%) Remark
A1 75-100 8 Excellent
B2 70-74 7 Very Good
B3 65-69 6 Good
C4 60-64 5 Credit
C5 55-59 4 Credit
C6 50-54 3 Credit
D7 45-49 0 Pass
E8 40-44 0 Pass
F9 0-39 0 Fail
American System
Most schools use a 4.0 scale or a 100 scale.
Some schools treat an A+ which is called an A Plus as a 4.3 out 4.0 or 110% out of 100. Some consider it a 105 out of 100. Here are 2 most typical grading scales
A+ +4.30
A= 4.00
A-=3.7
B+=3.3
B=3.0
B-=2.7
C+=2.3
C=2.0
C-=1.7
D+=1.3
D=1.0
D-=0.7
F= Not a passing grade fail
A+= 97-100
A=93-96
A-=90-92,
B+=87-89
B=83-86
B-=80-82,
C+=77-79
C=73-76
C-=70-72
D+=67-69
D=63-66
D-60-62
F=0-59 Not a passing grade fail.
American Weighted GPA
In many public High Schools, if you take an AP, IB or honors you get some bump to your GPA for that coursework.
The most typical bump would be 1.0 for an AP or IB and 0.50 for a honors course.
So let's say you take 8 classes in an American HS and 4 of them are APs, and 2 of them are honors and 2 are non-weighted standard ones. Lets say you get all As. Your unweighted GPA is 4.0 and your weighted GPA for the grading period is 4.625. Here is the calculation.
8 classes times 4.0 = 32 UWGPA Points. 32/8=4.0 GPA
recalculated this would be 4 APs x 5.0=20 points, 2 Honors X 4.5=9 Points and 2 std X 4.0=8 Points for a total of 37 points. 37/8= 4.625 Weighted GPA for the grading period.
Since African grades look incredibly inflated meaning a 75 in Africa is an A but a 93-96 is an A in the US, I would use the letter grades whenever possible and convert them to a 4.0 scale. If you use the 100 pt scale, you might be an A student in Africa but a C student in the US.
Good luck.
