I had an interview with an Alumnus and was confused after it ended because I am unsure if what I said was correct (this post is to gain feedback for future interviews if I have any). Essentially, this interview was unconventional as the interviewer asked me to go straight at it and talk instead of utilizing the conventional question-answer method. So I talked about my career aspirations, why I am interested in the career, and specific experiences (extracurriculars) that pertained to my career aspirations. The interviewer would occasionally ask clarification questions in between my talking, and then we would allow me to ramble on. I am concerned because I reiterated what I wrote on my application, and I went slightly in-depth as to how my extracurriculars correlate with my future goals, which I feel defeated the whole purpose of the interview because the university's website states the interview is an opportunity to showcase who you are beyond the application. I didn't do this but elaborated more on my passions, which are already prevalent in the application. Sure the interviewer didn't look at my application (they conceded this), and I guess it educated them a little bit, but I am afraid I didn't discuss character as much and explained my ECs rather than talking about my character. I may be stressing for no reason, but what could I do differently to showcase my personality in future interviews?
Interviews that involve more back-and-forth Q&A still revolve around the same topics that you discussed. You have nothing to worry about - you were able to talk in detail about various aspects of yourself that make you a great applicant.
Going forward, I recommend asking the interviewer several questions at the end of the interview. This will demonstrate your interest in the school and will make the interview more engaging for the interviewer. Hope this helps!
