Can a high GPA compensate for a low SAT score at schools that require a SAT score like Tennesee for example.
It depends on how low the SAT is and what your GPA is. In 2022-2023, the mid-50th percentile SAT range for UTennessee was 1180-1320. Basically, what this means is if your score is 1180 or above, you have at least an okay/average score compared to other applicants. A 3.9-4.0 GPA could help balance this out, but if you have an exceptionally low SAT score that's below this range or even in the lower half, it won't look good. But if you have other strengths in your application like an extracurricular spike or great essays, a low SAT might not matter so much.
I'm not sure about Tennessee specifically, but I do know most colleges like to look at GPA and SAT scores separately. I have a high GPA and scored lower on the SAT and ACT so I did not submit my scores to colleges. Instead, I applied test-optional. If that is an option for you then I highly recommend taking it.
