PSAT and Extra Curricular Questions
Answered

I'm in 10th grade and I took the PSAT a while ago. I've been trying not to think about it, but I keep feeling self conscious about it. I got a 990 (440 in Math and 550 in English), is this anything to be embarrassed about?

I have a 3.9 GPA and I'm 5 out of 17 in my small class, I'm also taking PreCalc but even after all of this I'm still really nervous it's not enough because I don't do sports. I manage the girls volleyball team in fall but is that enough? I'm going to try rowing outside of school this year and I'm going to try to do much more volunteering. I'm also in Student Government, National Junior Honors Society, and Student Council but I'm scared. Is this just some "Sophomore Scare?"

Don't be scared! You got this :) As long as you are doing your best, that is all that matters and you shouldn't expect more from yourself. Unfortunately, modern culture puts tons of pressure on students to set unrealistic goals and expectations. I wrote a post you may find encouraging here: collegevine.com/questions/49823/to-the-embarrassed-or-guilt-worn-student

As long as you are doing what you love, the rest will work out! Don't feel pressured to attend an Ivy or top school just because thats The Way promoted. Instead, do what's best for you, your life, and your interests. I am an overachiever but thankfully my parents taught me to follow the calling for my unique life. So, instead of stressing myself out with Ivies, I looked for the school that would help me and my career the most. What program excited me? Where could I picture myself happy? In the end, I pinpointed the university that seems best for me and ironically, they have pretty low academics. BUT they have a wonderful hands-on experience approach and that's exactly what drew me.

Your life is special and you will find that place where you belong. It's ok if it's different or low in ranking as long it will help you reach your dreams. Just keep plugging away and do your best. You will survive high school and go on to do great things but only if you believe it and take it to heart.

Hope this helps. Please lmk if you have any questions!
