Common App Activities Section Help

Hi,

I'm a rising junior and I'm starting my common app application. I'm trying to get into one of those t20 colleges including cornell and upenn and I was wondering if working at my family's restaurant would be considered a strong extracurricular to put on my common app? I've been helping out at my family's restaurant since middle school, and it takes a lot of my time (I usually go there right after school and do my homework there while helping out and then go home around 9/10pm). I haven't been able to participate in as much extracurriculars as a result of this responsibility so would it be reasonable to put it as my first activity on the common app? Also after I've filled in all my extracurriculars, there are still 3 spots left out of the 10. Should I fill out all of the spots and include clubs that I'm a member of or just leave it out?

I would say first add all of your activities and club and etc and then you can go to your common app profile, writing section...there you can find the first essay topic...it will be great if you include your story in that essay...

saying how this work is important to you and how it completes your profile...

or you could add in activities under Family responsibilities category...

Hope it helps...

All the best!

Hello,

I would say to definitely put that job on your application. It shows how responsible and capable you are, especially having started doing it at a young age. Also, I would say put the rest of the clubs you are a part of on there, however if you don’t think it’s necessary I wouldn’t worry about it.
