i have bad extracurriculars and i'm a rising senior
Answered

- moved to the usa from india halfway through junior year and didn't do anything outside of school

- grades are above average (3.8gpa after having moved) 1350 sat, retaking in august

- took precalc honors, even though I ended up with an average grade. taking up 2 APs and another honors course in senior year

- don't have volunteer hours or extracurriculars to back these up. did win awards in India but I'm not sure if they'd help.

- stuff I have are a gold medal of excellence in the math olympiad (top 10% of grade), a game developer certificate in java, and a couple of other awards in the time I did karate.

- wanna apply as a math major because I like it and I've won math competitions. and because I heard computer science rates are going down over time.

I'm going to apply to schools with mid-range acceptance rates, like purdue, uiuc, rutgers, virginia tech, prolly some others. thoughts?

I think your situation with extracurriculars isn't going to be a huge problem because of all the other aspects that are considered in your application. The holistic system for admissions means that admissions officers see everything you submit and use it to decide your status. Some of your accomplishments, specifically the ones that align with your future major, will definitely look amazing and your academics seem to be great! To maximize your chances for the competitive colleges you want to apply to, your personal statement, essays, and supplemental responses could be a great option. You could use all of that to show that in addition to your academics and despite low extracurriculars, you are passionate about your future major and will be a strong addition to the college. If you're still concerned, try to do a few more things related to math this upcoming school year, like certifications or clubs at school. I hope that helped and let me know if you have any other questions about this! I
