My stats aren't competitive enough, how can I overcompensate with my ecs to get into top 25 colleges?
Answered

Hi everyone,

I'm aiming to get into a top 25 college(UMICH, UF, UT AUSTIN(OUT OF STATE), UNC) but I'm worried my stats might not be competitive enough. Here’s a quick overview:

Weighted GPA: 4.25

Unweighted GPA: 3.77

AP Classes: 11 by the time I graduate

SAT Score: 1340

Going into 12th grade

I have a range of extracurricular activities that I believe demonstrate my leadership, initiative, and impact, but I’m looking for advice on how to present them most effectively and possibly find more opportunities to enhance my profile.

Here are some of my key ECs:

Founder and Leader of WellNova LLC:

Established a fitness and health group promoting inclusivity, especially for special needs individuals and elders.

Treasurer of the Supply Chain Club:

Managed club finances, organized fundraising events, and spearheaded projects on sustainable practices.

Increased club funds by 30% and launched a successful school-wide recycling program.

Summer paid internship:

Assisted in processing and shipping orders, improving departmental efficiency, and learning logistics and supply chain management.

Volunteer with Pueblo Ingles:

Participated in a cultural exchange program in Spain, teaching English to Spanish students and enhancing cross-cultural communication skills.

Founder of BoozeBar LLC:

Co-created an automatic bartender and won the CIJE Tank 2023 competition out of 555 projects. The project is patent pending.

Various Leadership Roles in Sports Teams:

Played on Varsity Soccer and Volleyball teams, managed the Swimming Team, and served as the school mascot.

Soccer Beyond Limits:

Volunteered and played soccer with individuals with special needs, promoting inclusivity and physical activity.

Co-Founder of CVI:

Co-founder of CVI LLC which creates clothes for the visually impaired using accessible technology like Arduino, ultrasonic distance sensors, and vibrators to notify users of possible objects.

I’d love any suggestions on how to further strengthen my application with my current ECs or new opportunities I should consider. Also, any tips on how to best present these activities in my applications would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Keep in mind that all schools recalculates GPA. In all honesty the only thing you can do at this point is improve your SAT; If you can grind and get it near 1500 that will significantly boost your chances. Good luck!

I don't think you necessarily need more ECs. I would say the best thing to do would be to use numbers. For example, how many members did you have in WellNovaLLC? How many clothing items did you sell as the co-founder of CVI? Using specific numbers instead of giving a generic overview of what each activity is could really have a significant impact. Another big fact to consider is your essay. Your essay can really make a difference to your application, and since college apps are starting, I would advise you to work more on your essays rather than trying to come up with more ECs. Also, your stats are not going to make or break your application. GPA varies a lot from school to school, so as long as you are above a 3.7 UW I would say it really doesn't matter much. Hope this helps!
