Should I write my essay about a disabled family member influencing my major?
Answered

I'm a rising senior starting my common essay. A family member disability has a played a big part of my life and choosing to go into medicine. I'm thinking of writing my essay about how I have became compassionate, patient and have seen healthcare through them.I am also in a HOSA with a leadership position and volunteers experiences, I plan to included in the essay. I will also discuss my future in becoming an EMT, interest in laboratory science and responsibilities I had . Wondering should I really write about how my family member affect my decision on choosing medicine and my major. or will the college admission view the essay as a pity point/will be looked down on. any advice on how to write about it ?All advice is appreciated.

If you write about a family member be careful to not write mostly about that person. The Common Essay needs to be a focus on you and your qualities, and by adding too many words about another person it draws attention away from yourself.

The idea you have though sounds good, just don't make it a sob story.
