Hi!! I'm a grade 10 student who recently moved from Canada to New Jersey and the jump in education has been HUGE. Most of the courses I'm taking right now is to catch up with the high school curriculum here, which is why I am taking 3 mainly freshman courses in my school year (Algebra 2, French 2, and Biology), while the other 4 courses are on my level. I want to get an Economics major during my undergraduate year, but I don't know if I can make it into a decent university without Calculus since I will only be able to reach Pre-Calc in my senior year. I wanted to take summer school, but it is rigorous and most people who take the course fail (around 75%), which made me rethink whether or not I should actually take it. Looking towards my future, what should my next steps be?
I think see how you're doing in Pre-Calc, and if your confident, try learning some Calc topics and see how you do. If you do pretty well, then try taking that course. It will be hard, obviously, but if its worth it for you, go ahead and do that. Also, make sure you mention how the move affected your education in your application; there should be an additional comments section specifically for things like these, so you can explain not taking certain courses, or a bad GPA.
There are quite a few options available to you. You can take Pre-Calculus in 11th grade, skip Calculus AB, and go straight to Calculus BC in your senior year. Another option is to take on a bit more coursework during the summer.
