Hello everyone. Today I have gotten several connection requests from colleges that I have a 1% chance of attending. Does anyone know why these Colleges are reaching out if my chances of getting accepted are super low? Thank you in advance.
It's understandable to feel puzzled when colleges reach out, especially if you believe your chances of acceptance are low. Here are a few reasons why this might happen:
Marketing and Outreach: Colleges often reach out to a wide range of students to encourage applications and increase their applicant pool. This doesn't necessarily mean they have evaluated your individual profile yet.
Interest in Diversity: Schools value diversity in many forms, including geographic, socioeconomic, and academic diversity. They might see potential in your unique background.
Interest in Your Profile: While you might think your chances are low, colleges might see potential in aspects of your application that you might not be considering, such as your extracurricular activities or intended major.
Encouragement to Apply: Some colleges reach out to encourage students to apply and see if they can make a compelling case through their essays and recommendations, even if their academic metrics aren't at the top.
Recruitment Algorithms: Colleges sometimes use databases and algorithms to identify students who meet certain criteria or show potential interest in their programs.
I honestly think these connections are rather automated, kind of like all the emails we get from colleges. Also, Collegevine's chancing is not entirely accurate because your CV profile is not your college application. There are missing parts like your essay, awards, course selection, etc.
I personally have not used the connections (this is because I know where I want to go already) but I have heard from other peers on here that it is a bit faulty and maybe not as helpful as it is advertised. I always highly recommend going to the college website and making contact with an admissions counselor through the info there if you are serious about connecting with the university.
I hope this is helpful. lmk if you have any questions.

Thank you. Your answer gives a lot of perspective. I am an older student at 44 years old. I dabble in genetic research in terms of my own genetics and inherited conditions and I have always done things in terms of botany. I consider myself multiracial as well after doing my family ancestry dna. All of this is listed on my profile including all of the activities I've done over the years. My intended major is Anthropology. So as you've said, they might have found interest in these things. Thanks!
