MIT, summer programs, ACT
Answered

Hello, I have a question about the ACT range for MIT. I got a 34 composite on the ACT, and I wasn’t sure if it was in the range for it. On CollegeVine, it states that it must be a 35-36, which is quite worrying. On other websites, however, it states that the ACT range for MIT is a 34-36. Do I need a higher score or should I be satisfied with a 34? Thanks!

Edit: Are the scores and ECs good enough for RSI, LLRISE, MITES, Beaver Institute, and SAMS?

ECs:

Academic Team- Competed in the statewide KAAC tournament with the Quick Recall team as a starter and placed 5th with three other schools, and have been doing this since 6th grade. One of the captains of the QR team

Science Olympiad- Competed and won in regionals as a whole in the school, placed 4th in Astronomy and 3rd in Fermi Questions in-state first year, and placed 2nd in Experimental Design sophomore year. I also was the astronomy coach in my sophomore year.

Quiz bowl- I competed in many tournaments on a team around the nation and in the Small School National Tournament in both my first and second years. My first year, I competed in the A-team, and the team got 8th place. I competed in the B-team my sophomore year and placed 1st in rising star overall in the tournament by scoring the most out of all first- and second-year students. One of the captains of the Quiz bowl team

STLP- Designed a website that promoted reading skills and information gathering among students of the school for the project, which was able to make it into the state

Sophomore Class President

NHS

Beta Club: Competed in the Beta Club testing for science in my first and second years and got 3rd at the state level, allowing me to test in nationals. I got placed in nationals both years, getting 8th and 9th consecutively.

KYA- Participated in a model state government in both my first and second years, helped write the bill for my school, and participated as a delegate

Awarded the National First-Generation Recognition Program by Collegeboard

Has over 100 hours of volunteering, which includes an arts center, a dog shelter, Environment club, tutoring, and others

4.0 GPA unweighted, and a 4.13 GPA(due to not being able to take many APs my freshman and sophomore years, as my school didn’t allow me to do so) excluding this year

Took a College Physics course offered by a local college

Took AP Psychology and got a 4

Is taking AP Calc AB, AP Gov, APUSH, APES, AP Lang, and AP Chem, with a special topics class for the academic team, which doesn’t count as a credit or class

I am currently working on an engineering project that utilizes a moving telescope that can be controlled on a website to promote engineering and astronomy locally and statewide, as well as an ACT peer tutoring club/class for students who wish to make their scores higher

Great question! The ACT range can vary slightly depending on the source, but a 34 is generally within the competitive range for MIT. While CollegeVine may suggest that a 35-36 is ideal, many admitted students have scores within the 34-36 range. It’s important to remember that standardized test scores are only one part of your application.

MIT, like many selective schools, takes a holistic approach to admissions. This means they consider many factors, including your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendations. Your perfect GPA, AP scores, class rank, and involvement in various clubs and activities make your profile strong.

If you feel confident in other areas of your application, a 34 should not hold you back. However, if you're still concerned, you can focus on strengthening other parts of your application, like your essays and extracurriculars, to make sure you're presenting the best version of yourself.

Would you like to discuss how you can enhance other areas of your application, or is there something else you'd like to focus on?
