Hey guys, I just got my September ACT scores, and I'm pretty disappointed. I got the exact same score as my June test, which is a 33 composite (29 math, 35 english, 35 reading, 34 science). I worked really really hard to try to get my score up more (especially in math) and right now I'm just feeling like it wasn't enough. I feel really defeated. My dream school is Harvard (because my dad and grandpa went there) and right now I just feel like it's going to be impossible for me with this ACT score. My personal college counselor straight up told me that it will be really really difficult for me to get in with this score. Does anyone have any advice on how to boost my score for the October test, or like any other advice in general? I really really want this and I don't know what to do.
I understand how disheartening it can be to work hard and not see the improvement you were hoping for. It’s important to remember that your ACT score is just one part of your application, and you've got a lot of other strengths going for you. Your academic achievements and extracurriculars are impressive and can help create a strong application.
For now, let’s focus on how you can approach your next test attempt. When you're preparing for the October ACT, it might help to specifically target your math section since that's where you saw a drop. Here are a few strategies:
Focused Practice: Have you tried working through math problems that specifically challenge your weak areas? Targeted practice can help solidify concepts that are tripping you up.
Practice Tests: Are you taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions? This can help you get used to the pacing of the test and manage time more effectively.
Review Mistakes: After practice tests or problem sets, do you review your mistakes to understand where you went wrong? This is crucial for improvement.
Tutoring or Resources: Would you consider working with a tutor or using online resources like Khan Academy for targeted math practice? Sometimes a different perspective or explanation can make a big difference.
If you have any questions about these strategies or need more specific advice, feel free to ask. Remember, your application is about more than just numbers, and you have time to improve. What do you think might be the most helpful next step for you?
If you're ok with spending money on a program, the Princeton Review one is really helpful, and got my brother to a 35. I'd also say take as many practice tests as possible, you can access some on the ACT website (as well as practice questions) and through bluebook, which is the site the digital SAT is on. I'd also recommend, since your verbal scores are almost perfect, that you take the SAT, for that just focus on studying how to use the digital calculator. Not sure if this is coming too late for you, but good luck! Schedule another test if you need to, schools don't have to know how many times you took it.
