I know I’m super late to this but I’ve really been struggling trying to find a good topic to write my essay on. I’ve drafted some but I feel like they seem like sob stories. The prompts on the common app seem kind of cliche to me. If anyone has any advice or prompts, I’d really appreciate it.
This essay is where the college admissions officers meet you. Pick something that shares who you are. What do you want them to know about yourself?
Also, read it from their POV. These are people who want to see promising things in prospective students. You don't want to give the wrong idea. Showing vs. telling is super important in the admissions essay. I always recommend cutting back on the challenges and focus on the positive. A big mistake in writing college admissions essays is highlighting the challenges over the good changes, the growth.
Another thing to ask yourself: Is this something memorable? Will your essay stand out?

Chose topics that help show the best version if yourself. When writing about hardships, focus more on what you gained from that experience. Its also important that the essay showcases you as a writer, so don't try and use unnecessary adjectives. The point of an essay is so admissions officers can learn about you as a person.
