I read something once and I though it was really helpful. It said "Instead of focusing on delivering a complete, well-rounded profile, students should select an idea that can “change the world,” and put all their time and energy into this idea."

If you have a specific interest or talent, work on really developing that to the highest level. If you have a second interest that's really different, see if you can combine the two in an advanced way. For example, a football player interested in community service who sets up a free football clinic for low-income kids.
