Is it necessary to contact the counselor and correct the mistake or email the new essay copy. Or is it better to ignore the mistake since the word is not a big deal.
College admissions officers read hundreds of essays, and if the word is small and the typo non noticeable, they will most likely not notice it while reading. If the typo involves something major (mentioning the wrong school name, etc.) then a friendly call or email to the admissions office would be necessary, but it seems like that's not the situation here. Obviously typos are something you should try to avoid, but don't lose too much sleep over this.
Best of luck to you!
I don't think it should be a big deal unless it was a significant word or something you absolutely had to clarify.
