Hi, so I am in the National Honor Society this year and I must have at least 15 hours of community service. I am an aspiring filmmaker so I normally try to work with extracurriculars dealing with film/video. Recently, I have been volunteering to create videos for an online school, however, their classes are not free and students have to pay for them. Is this still considered community service given that I am volunteering or would it not be considered community service since I am not working with a non-profit? Thank you.
I believe that since you are not getting paid, it would still be considered community service. It sounds similar to volunteering for a summer camp, where the student might pay to attend but it counts as community service for the volunteers because they don't get paid.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
Keep in mind that there's a difference between community service (voluntary work that benefits a good cause) vs. volunteering/unpaid labor. I'm more inclined to say that this is the latter, unfortunately, unless the school supports some social causes. For the purpose of NHS, this could still work, but it's worth asking your advisor!
