Religious life

If you are wondering what a “multifaith” community is, it is a group of people who create spaces for sharing and exploring identities, perspectives, convictions, and practices. At Hearth, {Pause}, or any of the programs of the Multifaith Chaplaincy, you will meet some of these student leaders and many others who bring unique stories and perspectives. These Multifaith Partners plan all the activities of the Multifaith Chaplaincy, so you will see them around.

Summer Study Aboard

Summer study abroad programs provide an opportunity to develop language skills in preparation for a semester abroad, or to have an abroad experience when an entire semester abroad is not possible due to competing academic, extracurricular, or personal interests.

Traditions

Puddle Jump

Students plunge into fun during the winter months by cutting a hole into the ice of Lake Andrews and jumping in wearing a variety of crazy costumes. Hot coco, cider, coffee, ad friends await them after their swim.

Trashion Show

Each year to draw awareness to waste on campus and campus sustainability students craft designer looks out of found trash then take to the runway to show off their masterpieces.

Harvest Dinner

The Harvest Dinner at Bates is a time to gather as a community during the colorful autumn months in Maine and share a meal together. Great music, great food, and great company are the highlights to this campus-wide celebration.

Thesis Binding Ceremonies

The senior thesis project at Bates is each students culmunating academic expereince. Hours of hardwork, dedication, and passion lead to the final product and final celebration. Each senior traditionally will hold a binding ceremony in which they invite family, friends. and supporters to watch them take that last step of the thesis binding.

Martin Luther King Junior Day

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance at Bates College includes a suspension of classes and a day filled with discussions, readings, screenings, and workshops. This tradition began in 1991 amidst the Gulf War, reflecting on peace and justice issues.
